What if we were to live the dream of our best possible selves?

As I work, coaching people, for different purposes, across a broad section of society, I am struck by the similarity of responses to one particular exercise. The exercise is the best possible self visualisation. I think it may hold the key to the survival of the human race.

That may sound grand, but as we come #outoflockdown and #returntowork we MUST face the #climateemergency or accept our own extinction.

The trouble is that our view from here is that in the image above. The #jumplookstoobig And because we cannot see where we can get to if we jump in good faith we fail to move at all. This lockdown has felt as though, in dealing with the pandemic for our safety, we have slid to a stop on all the things that matter to survive the climate crisis.

The time has come where if we don't shift into action, 3-5 degrees of warming is the most probable outcome. This is likely to make the planet uninhabitable for many species, including humans. At the very least, 8 people out of 10 will have to migrate to avoid flood, fire, geothermal activity and desert encroachment. Our societies cannot deal with that scale of change. Yet every day we delay action, we make that more likely.

What I have noticed in reflection is that when in touch with our best possible selves, humans are:

  • Concerned: Wanting to influence important matters seemingly beyond our immediate control

  • Altruistic: Kind to selves and to each other

  • Creative: Genius emerges linking thoughts and ideas that have never before been put together

  • Collaborative: Co-creative to make something happen and finding enjoyment in doing things together

  • Determined: Motivated to keep going in the most difficult circumstances.

We have seen much of our best possible selves lately in overcoming the pandemic, regardless of who we are, our resourcefulness has been on show. Well done to everyone involved. We need to keep moving tirelessly in service of our children and grandchildren so that their future is less bleak.

The jump is big, but not yet too big, if we move fast and strong.

Achieving the targets set in Paris is a must. Write to your MP and state your concern now. Ask what they are doing to ensure we meet them.

Act in love and invite others to act from their best possible selves too.

We have to face this emergency and ensure we and our governments around the globe move fast and strong, using our best possible selves.
